Introduction : The basic and primary function of the ION Scalebuster® as a physical water conditioner is to inhibit and remove scale and or corrosion in general pipe-work, heating and plumbing equipment, appliances and processing equipment. The ION Scalebuster® is a patent protected device which creates a unique static effect as water passes through the device. Turbulence is encouraged so that electrical energy builds up in the form of static on the surface of the special dielectric material inside. Some of the kinetic energy in the moving stream of water is converted into both heat and electrical energy. The strength of the static charge is a function of the value of the friction coefficient and the surface area of the dielectric. The static causes an imbalance between the surface of the dielectric and the water. It is well known that various forms of electrical energy play a role in the successful conditioning of hard water. The static generated by the ION Scalebuster® increase the total charge in the system which encourages the neutralization of like charges or suspended colloids. These then coagulate and act as nuclei for the growth of precipitated scale-producing substances. Additionally, the galvanic effects of the special zinc electrode offer cathodic protection to pipe-work upstream and downstream ION Scalebuster®. The zinc electrode contributes to the precipitating effect on negatively charged particles. The zinc ions play an important part in breaking down existing rust and corrosion deposits through interchange with iron-based compounds. ION Enterprises Ltd were one of the first manufacturers to design and assess their product by using laser particle analysis as a means of determining the effectiveness of the ION Scalebuster®/ ISB® Technology in creating precipitated particles.
